It is important to acclimate your dog to cold temperatures before taking her out on a long excursion. Dogs, just like their humans, can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia. A little common sense and a watchful eye on your part can prevent any serious problems. When taking your dog for walks around town, make sure to wipe off her feet when you return home. Salt and ice-melt can get in between toes and cause discomfort and irritation, it can also be toxic if your dog licks it off her feet. Many vets advise clipping the fur from between the toes to avoid getting little snowballs caught in there, causing discomfort. If your dog does pick up some snow or ice gently remove it with your fingers, don't allow her to chew it out as she may damage her pads. Old, young and sick dogs are most prone to cold related problems. Look into purchasing or making a doggy jacket and booties to keep your pal nice and toasty this winter!
